On September 22, 2024, Kathmandu University (KU) and Lumbini Buddhist University (LBU) have signed a landmark Definitive Agreement to jointly offer a Master’s program in International Relations, Peace, and Diplomacy. This collaborative effort, formalized on August 22, 2024, marks a significant step in fostering academic excellence in the fields of diplomacy and peacebuilding. The program aims to provide students with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to global peace efforts and diplomatic relations, with a special emphasis on the cultural and philosophical foundations of peace, as embodied by LBU's Buddhist heritage.

Under this two-year program, students will engage in a full-time, English-medium curriculum with participation from both universities. Beginning in November 2024, the program will admit 25 students, including international candidates, and will feature shared teaching responsibilities between KU and LBU. The first year of the program will be conducted at LBU’s City Campus, while the second year will alternate between the two institutions. Graduates will receive a joint degree and have the opportunity to participate in the convocation ceremonies of both universities.

The agreement is a continuation of the partnership between KU and LBU, which was first established in 2020 and renewed in 2023. Both universities are committed to ensuring the program’s success by mobilizing resources and securing funding, with academic guidance provided by a joint Steering Committee. This partnership highlights Nepal’s growing role in promoting peace, diplomacy, and international relations through education.
